The Jets placed Joyner (hip) on injured reserve Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Joyner had already been ruled out for Sunday's regular-season finale against Miami after aggravating a hip injury Week 17 against Seattle. With the Jets already eliminated from playoff contention, the 32-year-old will look to get healthy again heading into the 2023 offseason. Joyner re-signed with the Jets on a one-year, $2.6 million contract in March of 2022, so he'll be set to hit free agency heading into his 10th professional season.

Joyner injured his triceps in his Jets debut last season and proceeded to miss the remainder of the season. The veteran safety is back at full health and will compete for a starting spot this preseason. Prior to the 2021 campaign, Joyner totaled at least 40 tackles in each of his previous seven seasons, twice eclipsing 70.
The versatile Joyner could spend time at both safety and nickel cornerback for the Jets. The 30-year-old veteran has notched at least 66 tackles four times in seven NFL seasons.
An undersized but hard-nosed safety with slot corner ability, Joyner is a better real-life player since his corner reps limit his tackle upside and his coverage skills lead quarterbacks to throw elsewhere. He could play more than 1,000 snaps this year after the Raiders paid up in free agency to lure him from the Rams, however, and Joyner likely would have surpassed the 80-tackle mark if the Rams hadn't sat their starters Week 17. His tackle rate could improve as he leads an Oakland defense that needs more cleaning up at the second and third levels than the Rams did.
The two big fish Los Angeles added to its secondary this offseason - 2016 All Pro cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib - will get most of the attention, but Joyner finished the 2017 season as Pro Football Focus' fifth-ranked safety league-wide and is an impactful player in his own right. With that said, Joyner hasn't been overly productive in the tackle column during his career and consequently makes for a risky IDP option ahead of the 2018 campaign. The upside here is that he could have a career year while the Rams' talented defensive line - anchored by reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald and three-time first-team All-Pro Ndamukong Suh - provides opposing quarterbacks little time to make good decisions downfield.
While Joyner started just eight of the 14 games he appeared in last season, he still totaled 66 tackles (50 solo) and five passes defended. The former second-round pick was undersized (5-8) as a cornerback and is expected to start at free safety in 2017. The move should be a nice fit for Joyner to take advantage of his opportunistic instincts. The promotion puts him in line to post a career-best fantasy season, making Joyner an intriguing late-round flier.
Once a second-round pick, Joyner finally began to live up to his pedigree having racked up 72 tackles, six passes defensed and two sacks in 2015. At press time, he appears to have secured the Rams' No. 2 cornerback job and could be a sneaky IDP pick opposite the likes of Trumaine Johnson.
Joyner was originally projected at safety heading into 2014, but due to an injury bug ended up playing more at cornerback. A groin injury cut his season short, as he had amassed 22 tackles in the three games before being injured. He should see a lot of time as the nickel back this season, especially because E.J. Gaines is out for the year.
The Rams are high on Joyner after selecting him in the second round out of Florida State. He is a quick, albeit undersized, defensive back and could compete for playing time at corner and/or safety.
