ANALYSIS
After spending his first five seasons in the professional ranks in the NBA, Nicholson headed to China last September after failing to attract much interest from North American club. Over 46 games for the Guangdong Southern Tigers, Nicholson averaged 22.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals in 34.5 minutes per contest, establishing himself as one of the CBA's top stars. He'll join a new team in 2018-19 with the hope of attracting renewed interest from the NBA when the CBA campaign comes to a close.

For the second straight season, former coach Jacque Vaughn asked Nicholson to be something he's not: a perimeter-oriented player. Standing at 6-foot-9, Nicholson left college as one of the most proficient postup players in the country, but for the third straight season, his playing time and games played diminished. In a career-low 40 games, the Canadian power forward played a team-low 12 minutes and averaged 4.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 0.3 blocks per contest. It was a healthy season for Nicholson, who was withheld from 38 of the Magic's first 56 games by coach's decision. Nicholson doesn't offer competent rim protection or offensive spacing, making him a relic in today's version of the NBA. He's spending the summer competing with the Canadian National Team, but with the glut of forwards entrenched in the Magic's frontcourt, combined with Nicholson's inability to make his mark on either end of the court, his final season on his rookie deal may be his last in a Magic uniform.
Andrew Nicholson is entering his third season in the NBA. The 24-year-old Canadian averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.2 steals, and 0.3 blocks in 15 minutes per game over the course of 76 contests last season. Nicholson shot 43 percent from the floor on 5.5 attempts and 83 percent from the line on 0.8 attempts. He essentially regressed during his sophomore season, attempting to incorporate a three-point shot to supplement his advanced post game. Nicholson shot 89 three-pointers after failing to attempt any his rookie season, but the experiment didn't pay off as he only shot 32 percent from deep and saw a 10-percent drop in his field goal percentage. In addition to his shooting woes, Nicholson displayed lapses on the defensive end and lost his spot in the frontcourt rotation. The addition of Channing Frye and rookie Aaron Gordon jeopardizes Nicholson's minutes this time around. He spent the summer competing in an 11-game exhibition circuit with Team Canada, converting 40 percent from deep and 52 percent overall to the tune of 10.6 points per game. Nicholson posted even better numbers last summer with Team Canada, a transformation that didn't translate in the NBA, meaning expectations should be muted.
Unlike fellow rookie O'Quinn, Nicholson saw a decreasing diet of court time during the second half of last season. Simply put, Vaughn was hoping for better quality and better improvement than Nicholson was able to produce. He will continue to get opportunities, but unlike last year, now those opportunities should only come after O'Quinn has had his fair share.
Nicholson impressed in Summer League with his low post and rebounding prowess. He is 6’9 with a 7’4 wingspan and decent athleticism, but has a lot to learn defensively. Orlando will look to get the former Bonnie and 19th overall pick some playing time, especially without Harkless and Harrington.
