Urrutia dealt with a sports hernia that wiped out a good portion of his 2014 season, but he returned healthy in 2015 while spending the season in Triple-A and earning a cup of coffee with the Orioles. Urrutia cut his K% to 16.0% in 2015. That is a positive step, but the problem is what he does with balls in play. Urrutia had a 1.9 ground out/air out ratio, which was actually an improvement over his shocking 3.1 ratio from 2014, a season in which he had no home runs in 253 total at-bats. As you can see, the problem for Urrutia has been getting the ball in the air. He does have good power, but it never gets a chance in games since the ground has served as a magnet. Urrutia should enter the spring with a chance to make Baltimore's roster, but it is doubtful the club will see him as anything more than a fourth outfielder.
The Orioles did not include Urrutia as part of their September callups, as he showed very little at Triple-A Norfolk when he was healthy in 2014. It should be noted that he missed more than two months of the season following sports hernia surgery in May. Already 28, his time to make an impression and carve out a bench role in the big leagues is quickly running out. Showing poor plate discipline (23.7% K%, 2.4% BB%), Urrutia's slash line (.270/.284/.338) with the Tides did little to suggest that he's going to hold his own against top-level pitching. Defensively, he's very limited in the outfield, which makes his future projection even more bleak. Regardless of his organization in 2015, Urrutia seems destined to open the year back at Triple-A.
Urrutia has a keen hitting eye, which helped him post a .913 OPS between Double-A and Triple-A in 2013. Urrutia then took his act to the Arizona Fall League, where he slashed .377/.434/.551 with three home runs in 69 at-bats. A Cuban defector who signed in 2012, Urrutia's hit tool is more advanced than his power, but at 26 years old he should be ready to contribute sooner rather than later. The Orioles may still look to find a left fielder elsewhere, but Urrutia may compete with Steve Pearce and Nolan Reimold for at-bats. He is a player to monitor throughout spring training in case he lands in a situation to see a significant bump in playing time.
One of the top players currently playing in Cuba.
