2024 Fantasy Outlook
By Arenado's lofty standards, his 2023 season was a disappointment. He totaled just 26 home runs, his fewest in a full season since 2014. His average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate all ranked in the bottom 40 percent of the league, per Statcast. It wasn't a disastrous season by any means as Arenado was an All-Star and still ranked above league average by most offensive measures, but it was a sizable step back from the previous year when he was an MVP finalist in the National League. The final month of the season was particularly rough as Arenado limped to the finish line with a .509 OPS in his final 17 games before back spasms ended his campaign. Despite the missed time at the end, Arenado still cleared 600 plate appearances, meaning he's now done so in each of the last eight full seasons. He's probably a future Hall of Famer and should be expected to bounce back to an extent, but his best days are likely behind him as he nears 33 years old. Read Past Outlooks
Takes live BP on Monday
Arenado (back) is scheduled to take live batting practice Monday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Arenado's involvement in the Cardinals' first full-squad workout of spring training implies that he reported to camp with no restrictions after he closed the 2023 season on the 10-day injured list due to lower-back spasms. In an effort to improve his flexibility and avoid further back problems during the upcoming campaign, Arenado took up pilates and shed a few pounds in the offseason. The 32-year-old still boasts an elite glove at third base, but he showed his some slight signs of decline in 2023, with his .774 OPS representing a 117-point decline from 2022. Arenado's batted-ball data also mirrored the dropoff in most of the counting categories, with his barrel rate, hard-hit percentage and average exit velocity all ranking in the bottom 40 percent of hitters in the league.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Gold Glove streak ends
Arenado, who finished the season on the injured list with back spasms, isn't a finalist for the NL Gold Glove at third base, ending a streak of 10 straight seasons winning the award.
ANALYSIS
The veteran third baseman's plus-one DRS and plus-five OAA in 2023 are both the worst figures of his career, so it's not a major surprise he wasn't named a finalist. Arenado also took a step back offensively despite still hitting 26 homers, as his .266/.315/.459 slash line is the first time he's posted an OPS below .800 since his rookie campaign -- the shortened 2020 season notwithstanding. There were rumors of the Cardinals trading Arenado at the deadline over the summer, but he stayed put and seems unlikely to go anywhere given his no-trade clause and the fact the organization is looking for a quick rebound after finishing last in the NL Central.

Save for the pandemic season, Arenado has totaled at least 30 homers with 100 RBI every season since 2015. He posted seasons with a higher wOBA in Colorado, but his 151 wRC+ was the best of his career. Arenado's defense was again stellar. The main differences between last season and his first with St. Louis were fewer strikeouts and more walks along with better BABIP fortune. His batted ball and Statcast numbers were virtually identical. Arenado missed a career high 14 games, but most were when he served a short suspension, was on the restricted list and on paternity leave so durability remains high. Arenado had a chance to opt out of his contract, but he declined. Playing in Busch Stadium could hurt his numbers towards the end of the remaining five years he has left on his contract, but there is currently no indication of a decline. What Arenado lacks in speed, he makes up for in reliability.
