Closer Watch
Chicago (N) - Manager Mike Quade said Carlos Marmol is out of the closer role until he is able to correct some flaws in his delivery. Marmol's slider, which is his signature pitch, has not been breaking of late, which may explain why he has not struck out a batter over his last six appearances. Kerry Wood and Sean Marshall should see ninth-inning opportunities while Marmol works on his mechanics.
Milwaukee - John Axford notched saves against the Rockies on Saturday and Sunday, the first opportunities the Brewers have been presented since Francisco Rodriguez joined the team over the All-Star break. K-Rod should see some saves eventually, but his first two appearances have come in the eighth inning (resulting in a hold and a win).

Recommended Pickup
Joe Nathan, P, MIN - We recommended Nathan as a pickup a few weeks ago, but I just wanted to re-highlight him now that manager Ron Gardenhire has officially swapped Matt Capps and Nathan on the closer depth chart. Need proof that Gardenhire is serious? Nathan has picked up saves Saturday and Sunday. The closer carousel is also spinning elsewhere in the majors, but unlike the situation with the Mets and the Cubs, Nathan should stick as the Twins' ninth inning man for the rest of the season. He still isn't striking out as many guys as he had previously in his career, but Nathan has been lights-out since returning from the DL in late-June.
